-DO NOT use the telephone unless there is a life-threatening emergency

-Check for gas and water leaks or downed power lines

-Check buildings for cracks and damages

-Have a portable radio on hand, so that you are able to tune in for news reports and any given safety instructions

-Avoid using your vehicle, so the streets remain accessible for emergency vehicles.
