Train Station, Ferry Terminal, Pedestrian Pathways & Bus Service
What is the Hercules Hub?
The Hercules Hub is a regional, state-of-the-art housing and transportation development. It will connect thousands of housing units with a new train stop along the Capitol Corridor, bicycle and pedestrian pathways, bus routes, carpool options, and future ferry service.
Since the Hub will be within walking distance of the Bayfront transit-oriented development, it will generate new transit ridership without putting more cars on the street. It will expand commute options for a nearby Community of Concern, which will have easy access carpool, bus, ferry, and rail services. It will provide direct access to retail and other services close to home and reduce overall trip demand, thereby contributing to social, environmental, economic, and health benefits.
The Hub will be a model for successful transit-oriented communities throughout the Bay Area and the state.
Why is this such an important project?
The Hub has all the components of the ideal regional housing and transportation center. It will be a model for successful transit-oriented communities throughout the Bay Area and will address some of our biggest challenges, such as:
- Housing: The Hub will bring 1,400 multi-family and workforce residential units and 340,000 square feet of retail, commercial office, and additional industrial/office space in direct access to bus, train, carpool, ferry, bicycle and pedestrian transit options. It will also help move people throughout the region – from Contra Costa and Solano Counties to San Francisco, Oakland, the South Bay, and Sacramento – so people can work and live less dependent on single occupancy vehicles.
- Traffic Relief: The Hub will provide direct access to convenient, alternative transportation and help move cars off of I-80, the most congested freeway in Northern California.
- Environmental Benefits: The development of the Hub will remove approximately 4.3 million commute trips annually off the road. The project will also have bicycle paths east and west of the station, encouraging commuters to bike.
Construction of the Hub:
The City of Hercules has been working on this project for almost two decades, and three phases have already been completed. The City has been very successful in garnering federal, state, and regional grants and funds for the Hub. To maximize funding competitiveness, the prior concept for the Hub has been streamlined to provide an efficient, highly functional station structure and bus access to the transit plaza. These revised improvements provide for a fully-functional and attractive rail station and transit plaza on a more cost-effective basis.
The Hub has full environmental clearance through NEPA and CEQA. The environmental documents are available here.
